Time Dealer of the Year

Time Dealer of the Year Award

2013 Nominee
Richard Patterson

Responsive Image"What has been most rewarding for me is the opportunity to help so many others learn the right way to be in the automobile business," nominee Patterson said. "When I speak of the right way, I am talking about basic Universal rules: honesty and integrity."

A 1968 graduate of Northwestern High School in Hyattsville, Maryland, Patterson studied accounting at Southeastern University in Washington, D.C. He served in the United States Navy from 1969 to 1973.

And he has used his affinity for managing businesses to raise money for area causes. The one closest to his heart is the annual Joan Hisaoka Make a Difference Gala, which honors the sister of his close friend and business partner who lost her battle with cancer. The event has raised $5 million since its inception in 2008. "I was honored to help Bob create this wonderful testament to Joan," he said. "To see how so many people in need can be helped with the funds raised from this event is truly humbling." Patterson also co-founded the Leukemia & Lymphoma Society's Bobby Mitchell Hall of Fame Golf Tournament, generating $12 million for cancer research over its 22-year history.

Patterson is also committed to education, supporting the University of Maryland and providing internships to high school vocational students at his dealerships. He added, "I have had the honor to guide and coach hundreds of people along the way." Patterson was awarded the Northwood Institute Dealer Education Award.

Patterson was nominated for the TIME Dealer of the Year Award by Gerard Murphy, president of the Washington Area New Automobile Dealers Association. He and his wife have four children and five grandchildren.

Time Dealer of the Year Award

Responsive ImageThe Time Dealer of the Year Award is given annually at the NADA Convention to dealer leaders who have distinguished themselves in the automobile business, in the industry and the community. Dealer associations making up the Automotive Trade Associations network which includes state and major metropolitan area dealer groups, nominate members, which WANADA and other ATAE associations do each year.

The dealers who received the Time Dealer of the Year Award this year are Dick Patterson of RRR Automotive, WANADA's nominee, and Sam Weaver of Chevy Chase Cars, MADA's nominee.

WANADA was pleased to nominate its chairman-elect Dick Patterson for the prestigious Time Dealer of the Year Award (TDOY) for 2013, which he and others received at the NADA Convention this year in Orlando, Fla.

Besides being eminently successful in the automobile business, Patterson's community leadership is also impressive. For five consecutive years Patterson and his partner Bob Hisaoka have sponsored the Joan Hisaoka "Make a Difference" Gala to raise funds for cancer patients locally in memory of Bob's late sister. Patterson was also a founder, and is an ongoing supporter, of the Bobby Mitchell Hall of Fame Classic, an event where area dealers and OEMs have raised substantial funds of the years for leukemia and lymphoma research. Patterson has also been a leader in education, for which he has also been recognized with the Northwood University Dealer Education Award.

Dick Patterson started his career at Safford Lincoln Mercury in Silver Spring in the 1970s as a business manager. He later joined Rosenthal Companies, where he got into sales management and eventually ran the entire deal organization. From there, Patterson set out on his own, organizing and running RRR Automotive, which he has done since 2000, operating dealerships across this area and in other parts of the country.
